America's Beauty Show - ChicagoThis year, we were presented with a once in a life time opportunity that left us inspired and eager to get behind our chairs. We couldn't wait to share our new knowledge with all of our valued clients and to give them an unforgettable experience each and every time they visit our salon! Our journey was to America's Beauty Show in Chicago, one of the absolute best shows our industry has to offer! At the show, we were introduced to several new hair cutting, coloring and styling techniques, as well as brand new hot products and styling tools. Above all, we were offered the unique and very humble opportunity to meet, socialize and learn from several icons in our industry, including John Paul Dejoria, Angus Mitchell, Robert Cromeans and Nick Arrojo, as well as the past two winners of the television show, "Shear Genius." Nick ArrojoYou may recognize his name from the hit TLC show, "What Not To Wear", as he is the genius who transforms "bad" hair into "great" hair by flicking his razor in out-of-control motions to create masterpieces. The Local Motion staff participated in a private Master Class with Nick, which he calls "Razor Fundamentals", in which he and his team taught three haircuts using his specialized razor. Nick's attention to detail stressed to us of the importance of "focus" while cutting our client's hair. His techniques for using the razor according to hair type, face shape, and overall style goal reinforced in us to always think about and visualize how every single hair will fall into place in the finished style! An interesting point that Nick made was that many clients don’t think that their hair can be razor cut. He proved that this certainly isn’t true and said it best when he told us, "It's not the razor that gives a bad haircut, it's the person using the razor!" All in all, Nick's class taught us the hottest techniques and trends for the season, giving rhyme and reason to the way we achieve the soft, wispy looks of the stars we see on television and in every magazine. From the television screen to real life, Nick proved to be a talented, humble man whose love for hairdressing is infectious. We thoroughly enjoyed meeting him and are confident that when we use our creative razor abilities on your hair, you will be Wowed! John Paul DeJoriaJohn Paul is famous as a former homeless person who went on to become a billionaire businessman! Today, DeJoria is involved in a variety of business ventures, primarily John Paul Mitchell Systems, one of our industries finest and most respected professional product lines, which was founded in 1980. Currently, on behalf of hairdressers worldwide, John Paul's recent travels include conferences, speaking engagements, school openings and philanthropy efforts. Obviously an inspiration to many, meeting John Paul DeJoria was an absolute highlight in our careers! There is quite a history with John Paul and Local Motion Hair Design! Angela Lawrence, Local Motion's owner, was a bannered associate for Paul Mitchell in the late 80's and early 90's. She traveled the country, teaching on stage to fellow hairdressers. After many years away from the Paul Mitchell "family", we were invited to a cocktail reception at the Paul Mitchell Academy in Chicago. With no particular expectations, we walked into the Academy excited and perhaps a bit nervous, hoping we would be introduced to some very famous people in our industry.
Who was the first person we met? None other than John Paul DeJoria! He graciously shook hands with each one of us with a heartwarming smile. He lingered for a moment with Angela and said, "Wow! It’s so nice to see you again!" What?? There was no way this man remembered Angela Lawrence from little Butler, Pennsylvania who worked for him years ago... but he did! What a memory, and what a man of wonderful character, intellect and just plain good-spirited wholesomeness. All of these qualities were so apparent just upon shaking his hand and having a casual conversation with him! But... the real connection came later when he took the small stage and addressed the audience of hairdressers, all of us eager to hear his words of wisdom about our industry!
He spoke mostly about the "experience" we offer our clients each time they visit us. He pointed out that it truly is not about us, the stylists, but instead, it’s all about the clients! He spoke about the idea of always making a conscious effort to assure that each client's appointment with us will be the one of, if not the best part of their day! This statement was the spark that fueled the fire for us, and something that is always first in our minds with each guest that walks through our salon’s doors! Much of our career is about beauty and fashion, but a lot of it is also based on the connections, trust, and relationships we build with our clientele. All of us at Local Motion Hair Design strive not only to make you, our clients and friends, look and feel beautiful, but to also feel confident, important and happy!
